Xeno's Bookshelf now brings you:
Desert Raven Archives Page 40 Our local Neighborhood Watch meeting began promptly at two o'clock that Saturday afternoon. Gary presided as usual and read over the minutes from the last meeting. When he came to the section on the assignments that each of us were supposed to do, he began with Barbara Ennis and Alice Kilmer. They were supposed to keep an eye out on the Raven. They said that they noticed nothing except a small black- haired puppy hanging around the apartments. They asked if it belonged to any of us. No one claimed the pup. Wayne and Sheila Walters were asked to keep their eyes and ears open to anything. Sheila told me that she had obtained some information on Blondie and Flattop. She gave me an envelope and told me to look at it later. The Valichecs had been assigned the job of trying to find out who lived in some of the rooms that we were not sure about. We knew of the Mantoks, who could not attend the meeting today, Bobby and Donny, and the Harrellsons. Room's 102, 104, 106, 204, 206, 304, 306, and 308 were the apartments that we didn't have names for. Of course room 206 could be scratched off, as that was Ben's room. At that point in the conversation I duly introduced Ben to the group. He seemed somewhat shy, but was given a round of applause as our newest member. Someone, I think it was Donny, asked him where he moved here from. Ben must have not heard, for he didn't reply. Jacob and Cyndie Valichec were not able to tell from the cluster mailbox who, if anyone lived in any of the Desert Raven apartment rooms as there were no name tags on the boxes. Jack Dolly had been asked to keep his ears and eyes open at his barbershop. Jack stated, "The only thing odd that has been happening has been the talk about this fellow who has a couple of extra arms." Gary asked, "What is the talk along the lines of, Jack?" "It seems that some say that they've seen this guy walking around, actually running after something." "Running after what?" I asked. "After some type of large dog they've said," Jack responded. I wondered if the large animal wasn't really the pin-head beast. Dr.'s Miso and Michael Linn were to check with the Harrellson's doctor. Michael was to attempt to sketch the creature that he and his wife witnessed. Miso told of having talked with the doctor and how he was amazed at the sudden re-growth of the mole. The tissue that was removed was found to be benign yet the doctor wanted to remove this 'new' growth from Tom. Michael showed us all a pen and ink drawing he made of the pin head 'beast'. It looked very similar to the thing that assaulted me. He was able to capture in his drawing the fact that the beast had human-like hands. Dave Danielson had been asked to keep his ears open to police scuttlebutt regarding strange events. He said he had a friend on the force who was going to pass on some information to him, but at the present, had not. Sharon who worked as a waitress at CJ's had also kept her ears open. CJ's was a favorite haunt of the L.A. county sheriffs assigned to the east- side substation. Sharon said much the same as Jack; there had been numerous reports of a four-armed man and a large dog-like animal seen on the Eastside. The general feeling among the officers was that this was just a hoax. Perhaps some teenager having a good laugh at the expense of the derelicts who frequent the bus station and surrounding area. She thought that one officer, Stephen Ellis, had been bothered a little bit more about the sightings. In fact, when other officers were proclaiming the sightings as a hoax, or a prank, Stephen insisted that there may be more to this than met the eye. Sharon got the impression that Stephen may have actually seen something and wasn't letting on for fear of being ridiculed by his comrades. Sharon said she would try to press Stephen for more information. James and Lorrie Arsante had checked on the 'phony' witnesses who were creeping around the Raven. He explained that they were certainly not witnesses. Owing to the fact that Ben was present at our meeting, Jim didn't go into the fact that there was some question as to who the real Ben Quatten-Fireton was---a young man, or a 70-year-old senior citizen? I was to find out what I could about the ownership of the Raven, who managed it, who paid the bills. I told the group what I had found out from Xeno and the county building records. I also told them all again what had happened with the attack of the beast and the subsequent flea that Ben had extracted from my neck. Bobby McWilliams and Don Bolling were asked to record the noises heard about the Raven. They had brought over a tape recorder and set it up to play a tape they said they had recorded a few nights ago. Listening to it was chilling.
