Desert Raven Archives Page 86 "Why do you ask how long I'd known Rick before he died?" I queried. "How much does Rick still mean to you?" "Well, Ben, if you're asking whether or not I'm still obsessing about Rick or not, I'm not." Ben looked at me and held both of my hands together and asked, "How would you feel if Rick was alive?" "You mean if he never had died?" "No, I mean if he were to walk through your door right now, how would you deal with that?" "Well it would be a great shock, of course, but would I still love Rick? I don't know, Ben. Why?" "I have reason to believe that Rick is no longer dead." That stunned me. What would prompt Ben to say such an outrageous thing? "You mean you think that the nude man who I saw was Rick?" I asked. "I do." "But how, Ben?" Ben took a long sip of tea and pondered for a moment, trying to find the words to express himself on this matter. He finally spoke. "I have permission from my superiors to tell you some sensitive details. You must assure me that you will be discreet, for if this information became public, it could be disturbing to many." I assured him. He continued. "I told you before that I work for a governmental regulatory agency. That is true. But the government that I work for is not your government, nor is it for any government here on this planet." "You're from another world?" "Yes Grant, and from another time. You once saw an appliance in my kitchen and you asked what it was. I told you that it was a blender. It is a blender, but not to mix drinks, or materials. It is a device that helps to blend the edges of time segments." "Time segments, what do you mean?" "Time normally flows constantly, we cannot tell when one moment becomes another, it just smoothly makes a transition. But if time is somehow upset, events can come crashing in upon other events, not smoothly, but with catastrophic circumstances. That tool can smooth out the edges, get things back in sync where they belong. When I arrived home from my time away, I observed my device indicating a reading that time had been disturbed in the radius of the Raven and the Sussex. That's why I called you so late. I feared that you might no longer exist. When I saw the flyer about vacating the premises, it was pretty clear to me what happened. The machines that have the ability to restructure time can become in need of calibration. To calibrate one of these machines it becomes necessary to alter time within a radius of about a quarter of a mile. Sometimes the time swings are dramatic, and anyone remaining in such an area while the calibration was going on would either become a baby, or cease to have ever existed." "Is this machine that needed calibration the same as your 'blender?'" "No, they are separate devices. At least one machine is somewhere in the Raven. That is part of the reason why I am here, to investigate what is happening to the machine, who is operating it and why." "Special robotic units are sent to calibrate these machines as they are not affected by the time restructuring. The adverse reaction that the calibrating process has on organic matter or matter that was at one time organic, is extraordinary. As I said, an 85 year old man if exposed to the ripples of the machine's calibrating time energy could easily be regenerated to a 4 year old, or even worse, revert back to a time that he did not exist. When you mentioned your deceased husband's urn had exploded, I can only theorize what happened. When the machine was being calibrated these apartments were literally engulfed in a retraction of time. Everything went backwards." I was incredulous, but kept listening. I asked "Is this why the Harrellson's clocks were going backwards and they appear younger?" "Well, no, not really. The machines were responsible for that because they were malfunctioning and leaking. Scattered waves affected the Harrellson's apartment and only one branch of the maple tree in the patio. Sometimes there is no clear reason as to why one thing is affected and another is not. But the Harrellson's were becoming younger because the machines were malfunctioning and were in need of calibration. The effect that the time retraction had on Rick's ashes was such that he became reconstituted, and literally exploded the urn. Afterwards he would have been incredibly thirsty. He probably drank for nearly five minutes, then ate and finally slept. But there is a problem with Rick. He is not the man you married. He was probably reverted to a younger man than when you knew him. The main problem is his thoughts are pretty scrambled. He doesn't know what is real or imagined. Any memories of you are from a future version of the self he has become. This is quite disorienting on a person and this process always leaves affected ones mentally ill, to one degree or another."
